Real procedure under §16a AufenthG. The Ausbildung visa requires both a contract AND BA-ZAV approval. Below: every step, every document, every cost — with EUR estimates and country-aware tips.
Real timeline for an international applicant. Start at step 1, finish at step 10–11. Skipping steps is the #1 cause of delays.
B1 is the minimum for most Ausbildungen. Some healthcare and hospitality positions accept A2 entry with B1 by Berufsschule. Get certified at a Goethe-Institut in your country.
⏱ 6–12 monthsApply via Make-it-in-Germany, BIBB, IHK portals, Hwk, or directly to companies. Categories with the highest acceptance: healthcare (Pflege), hospitality (Hotelfach), trades (Metall/Elektro), IT, logistics.
⏱ 1–6 monthsA 3-year contract with monthly Vergütung (800–1,400 € gross). The contract must be officially registered with IHK or Hwk before you submit the visa file.
⏱ 1–4 weeksYour salary covers most needs but the consulate often wants proof for the first 3 months. Either a Sperrkonto (~6,000 €) OR a parental support letter (Verpflichtungserklärung) from a relative in Germany.
⏱ 1–4 weeksSame as Studium: travel insurance from arrival until you join the public system through your employer. Mawista, Care Concept, DR-WALTER (~30–60 €/month).
⏱ 1 weekYour secondary-school diploma (or equivalent) + birth certificate + criminal record — authenticated (apostille for Hague-Convention countries, otherwise consular legalization). Then sworn translation into German.
⏱ 1–4 weeksSame as Studium: your country's German visa-centre portal. Indicate "Ausbildung / Berufsausbildung" in the visa type.
⏱ 1–3 months waitOriginals + 2 copies of every document. Pay 75 € on site in local currency. Biometric photos and fingerprints.
For Ausbildung the German Federal Employment Agency must also approve. Done in parallel with consulate review. Required check: contract terms match labour law (no exploitation).
⏱ 2–6 weeksOnce both BA-ZAV and the consulate clear the file, the visa is issued. The Konsulat is the decision authority.
⏱ 4–12 weeks totalThe visa centre emails when ready. Visa is valid 3–6 months — enter Germany within that window. Convert to Aufenthaltserlaubnis at the local Ausländerbehörde within 90 days of arrival.
Bring the original + 2 photocopies of every document. The German consulate is famously strict — one missing item = a new appointment.
Valid for at least 12 months from your visa appointment. At least 2 blank pages.
💡 Keep your old passport too — German bureaucracy sometimes asks for previous travel history.
German biometric format: 35×45 mm, white background.
💡 Same studios as for Studium. Allow extras — your Anmeldung in Germany will need 2 more.
Signed by employer + IHK/Hwk-stamped contract. Must mention salary, duration (3 years), Berufsschule, and your role.
💡 Without IHK/Hwk registration, the visa is rejected. Your employer's HR knows the process; if they don't, that's a red flag.
Goethe B1, telc B1, or ÖSD B1. Some healthcare/hospitality positions accept A2 with B1 by start.
💡 Goethe-Institut centres offer B1 regularly. Cost ~155 €. Register ~6 weeks ahead — slots fill before the main intakes.
Either a Sperrkonto with ~6,000 €, OR a Verpflichtungserklärung (formal sponsorship from a relative in Germany), OR salary advance proof from employer.
💡 If you have a relative in Germany with stable income, the Verpflichtungserklärung at their local Ausländerbehörde is faster and cheaper than a Sperrkonto.
Coverage from arrival until your employer registers you in the public health system (~2–4 weeks).
💡 Mawista, Care Concept, DR-WALTER. ~30 €/month is enough.
Original + authentication + sworn translation. Some Ausbildungen don't require a school-leaving diploma (e.g. handwerk) but the consulate still wants your highest diploma.
💡 A vocational/technical secondary qualification is often even better than an academic diploma for technical Ausbildungen — request a certified copy from your training centre.
Authenticated and translated, same as Studium.
💡 From your local civil registry. ~4 copies recommended.
Lebenslauf with your studies and any work experience.
💡 Use our free CV Builder. For Ausbildung, prioritise any internship or part-time job — even informal — to show work-readiness.
Why this Beruf, why this employer, why Germany. Mention your German learning journey and post-Ausbildung plan.
💡 For Ausbildung, the consulate wants to see commitment. Mention you'll stay with the employer after Ausbildung if possible.
Your country's police/judicial authority, ≤ 3 months, authenticated, translated.
💡 Processing time varies by country — usually a few days. Request it early.
videx-national.diplo.de, printed, signed twice.
💡 Indicate "Berufsausbildung" as visa purpose. Use latest VIDEX (2024+).
Signed declaration that file info is correct.
💡 Lying = permanent Schengen ban.
For regulated professions (e.g. nursing, electrician), Anerkennung from the Anerkennungsbescheid is needed before or during the Ausbildung.
💡 Most simple Ausbildungen don't need this. Healthcare: yes, request via the Anerkennung-Finder website.
Estimated 2026 prices. The Sperrkonto (blocked account) is the biggest line and the most-asked-about. Mandatory items first; optional ones at the bottom.
⚠️ Prices vary by country and fluctuate, so amounts are rough EUR estimates. The Sperrkonto amount is set yearly by Bafög — €11,904 for 2026.
These are the actual reasons we see applications denied at the visa centre. Each one is preventable.
No Sperrkonto, no Verpflichtungserklärung, and Ausbildung salary alone doesn't reassure for the first 1–3 months.
✅ Sperrkonto with 6,000 € OR Verpflichtungserklärung from a German-resident relative OR an employer letter confirming a salary advance.
Bringing A2 to a B1-required Ausbildung. Auto-rejection (or contingent).
✅ Re-take B1 at Goethe — 6 sessions per year. If your appointment is close, postpone — better than a "language insufficient" stamp.
Contract not registered with IHK/Hwk, salary below tariff (less than €730 in 2026), employer not previously known to BA-ZAV.
✅ Verify your contract is IHK/Hwk-registered. If salary is below tariff, ask your employer to fix it. Reputable employers know.
Triggers: weak family ties, age outside Ausbildung norm (35+), motivation letter saying "I want to stay in Germany forever".
✅ Reframe motivation as "I want to learn this profession, then evaluate". Mention family ties at home. Don't bury the post-Ausbildung plan.
Fake employer attestation, fake bank statements, fake school diplomas.
✅ Never. Schengen-wide ban.
Missing 1 document, or photocopies in place of originals.
✅ Use the visa centre's exact checklist. Tab-divide.
Diploma without apostille/legalization, or non-sworn translation.
✅ Authenticate via your country's competent authority (apostille or consular legalization). Sworn translator only.
For some Ausbildungen, no Bac and no Brevet shown.
✅ Even partial schooling counts. Provide whatever you have. CAP/BTS for technical Ausbildungen is often preferred.
Use these alongside the guide above — they're built for the path to Germany.
